Arknights: Endfield – What Do the Character Classes Icons Actually Mean? Which Operators Represent Each Role?

If you've seen the official character posters for Arknights: Endfield, you've probably wondered: what do these little icons mean, and what role do they represent for each character? Actually, this is a core foundational design choice by the developers.
These icons correspond to each character's actual in-game role. Currently, there are 6 distinct character roles in Endfield, and the system can seem complex. So, this guide will break down exactly what these icons signify!
1. Guard

First up is the Guard. Just from the name, you can guess they are typically the main or sub-DPS in a team. Their skill mechanics often involve using abilities to first inflict Physical Status effects on enemies, then triggering a Break state. They usually wield swords or spears to deal physical damage. They specialize in applying Physical Statuses and are therefore also adept at dealing Stagger damage. They typically prioritize AGI (Agility) or STR (Strength) as their primary or secondary attributes.

Representative Guards include our Endministrator (the protagonist), the sub-DPS in physical teams Lifeng, and the 5-star operator Chen Qianyu. Looking at their skill effects, you can see pure physical damage and break-focused abilities.
2. Caster

Next are Casters. Whether in Endfield or other games, their primary role is dealing Arts (magical) damage. In Endfield, Casters can generally stack Elemental Attachments or directly apply Elemental Status effects.

Standard Casters include Yvonne, the 5-star operator Pelica, Wulfgard, and Fluorite. Like their physical counterparts, they are primarily pure damage-focused roles.
3. Striker

Different from the two roles above, the Striker role is for burst-damage operators. However, their high burst potential often requires team support, as their final damage depends on the number of Status stacks (e.g., Break stacks) on the enemy.

The first limited 6-star operator, Laevatain, is a Striker. Other upcoming or standard 6-star operators like Yvonne and Last Rite are also classic Strikers, possessing extremely high single-target burst capability.
4. Vanguard

The fourth role is the Vanguard. Starting with Vanguards, the remaining roles lean more towards support and utility. The main function of a Vanguard is SP (Skill Points) regeneration, with some also providing additional buffs.

Common Vanguard operators include the current main DPS for physical teams, the standard 6-star Pogranichnik, as well as the 5-star operators Arclight, Alesh, and Akekuri. These operators are all centered around SP regeneration mechanics.
5. Supporter

Next are Supporter operators. This role is easy to understand: they either apply BUFFs to allies or DEBUFFs to enemies, with some possessing special crowd-control abilities.

Classic Supporter operators currently include the standard 6-star healer Ardelia (restores HP), along with Gilberta, Xaihi, and Antal. All are very typical Supporter types.
6. Defender

Last but not least are Defender operators. Since Endfield teams consist of four members (often one main DPS, one sub-DPS, one support), the remaining slot is perfect for a Defender. Their role is to provide shields and a certain amount of healing, increasing the team's margin for error.

Currently, there are slightly fewer Defender-type operators compared to other roles. They include the standard 6-star Ember, the 5-star Snowshine, and the 4-star Catcher. However, based on the current game state, this selection is completely sufficient.
